Hockey Day in America 2012 Preview

After the success of  the inaugural Hockey Day in America last year, this year’s Hockey Day in America is expected to be bigger.

Emanating from the Wells Fargo WinterSkate rink at Rice Park, just a stone’s throw away from the home of the Minnesota Wild, the Xcel Energy Center, Hockey Day in America is a day dedicated to the sport of hockey across the United States. Like last year, 3 regional games kick-off the NBC doubleheader. The Pittsburgh Penguins head into Buffalo for their third of four meetings with the Sabres. In Hockeytown, the San Jose Sharks hit the halfway point of their tennis-tournament road trip as they face the impossible-to-beat-at-home Detroit Red Wings for their third of four meetings this season. Meanwhile, the Battle of I-55 continues as the Chicago Blackhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month to take on the St. Louis Blues for their third of six meetings, but the first game between these two Central Division rivals in Chicago. As said by Puck the Media writer Steve Lepore, TSN’s Gord Miller and Ray Ferraro will call the game in Buffalo, Red Wings play-by-play announcer Ken Daniels and Blues color analyst Darren Pang will call the game in Detroit, and NBC’s #2 team of Dave Strader and Brian Engblom will call the game in Chicago. Those games will start at 12:30 p.m. ET, with staggered start times (that means the next regional game will start at 12:35 p.m. ET and the third regional game will start at 12:40 p.m. ET). All of those game can be seen live in its entirety on NBCSports.com.

After the regional game, everyone will see the NHL on NBC Game of the Week; the lone meeting this year between the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins and the Minnesota Wild. Of course, NBC’s #1 team of Hall-of-Famer Mike “Doc” Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, and Pierre McGuire will call the game from St. Paul. Hockey Day in America concludes on NBC Sports Network when the NHL’s winningest goaltender, Martin Brodeur, and his team, the New Jersey Devils, travel to la Belle Ville for their fourth and final regular season meeting against the Montréal Canadiens. While another Hall-of-Famer, Bob Cole, and former NHL Defenseman Garry Galley hold the fort down on Hockey Night in Canada,  Hurricanes play-by-play announcer John Forslund and Bruins color analyst Andy Brickley will call the game in Montréal.

Canada celebrated the game last Saturday…now it’s our turn to celebrate. And if you’re headed to Rice Park in St. Paul, please arrive early.

Sam Gagner’s Historic Week in Review

If you’re an Edmonton Oilers fan, all you can look forward to is next season. But for now, the Oilers are playing the role of Playoff spoiler. In their last two games, the Blue and Orange knocked off 2 Western Conference powerhouses, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings, but the story of the moment is that Sam Gagner scored 6 goals and 5 assists in the span of 3 periods in 2 games! This breaks a franchise record once held by The Great One. If you missed it, here’s the list:

  1. GOAL: HALL (18) ASSIST: GAGNER TIME: 2:22 OF 2nd PERIOD
  2. GOAL: GAGNER (6) ASSISTS: EBERLE, SUTTON TIME: 7:26 OF 2nd PERIOD
  3. GOAL: WHITNEY (1) [PPG] ASSIST: GAGNER TIME: 12:23 OF 2nd PERIOD
  4. GOAL: GAGNER (7) ASSISTS: WHITNEY, EBERLE TIME: 1:54 OF 3rd PERIOD
  5. GOAL: BARKER (2) ASSISTS: SUTTON, GAGNER TIME: 3:43 OF 3rd PERIOD
  6. GOAL: GAGNER (8) ASSISTS: EBERLE, SUTTON TIME: 6:25 OF 3rd PERIOD
  7. GOAL: GAGNER (9) ASSISTS: EBERLE, HALL TIME: 14:31 OF 3rd PERIOD
  8. GOAL: EBERLE (20) ASSISTS: GAGNER, HALL TIME: 16:15 OF 3rd PERIOD
  9. GOAL: GAGNER (10) [PPG] ASSISTS: WHITNEY, HEMSKY TIME: 2:42 OF 1st PERIOD

  11. GOAL: GAGNER (11) [PPG] ASSISTS: SMYTH, WHITNEY TIME: 19:59 OF 1st PERIOD

If this doesn’t give the second-generation stud First Star of the Week honors, then what else will?
