What If? The 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs Under the Old Format (Part 2)

We’re officially into the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Under the old playoff format, teams would be re-seeded for the next round with the highest seed facing the lowest seed, and the second-highest seed taking on the second-lowest seed. This is what the second round looks like under the old playoff format.

1) Boston Bruins vs. 5) New York Rangers

2) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 4) Montreal Canadiens

1) Anaheim Ducks vs. 7) Minnesota Wild

5) Chicago Blackhawks vs. 6) Los Angeles Kings

As you can see, the second round would be very, very different. The matchups seen in the second round under the current playoff format would make an epic Conference Final under the old playoff format, especially if the Conference finals were Boston-Montreal in the East and Anaheim-Los Angeles in the West. Two of the matchups would be rematches of last year with the Bruins taking on the Rangers (2013 Eastern Semifinal) and the Blackhawks taking on the Kings (2013 Western Conference Final). Under the old playoff format, most likely all four series would be pretty much short, lasting 5-6 games.
