When the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Auston Matthews as the number one pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, they believed that he can be the franchise player the Leafs can build around. Well did anyone expect this to happen last night in his first NHL game?
Matthews became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his first NHL game. Here’s some more interesting facts regarding Mattthews historic NHL debut:
- Prior to Matthews, Derek Stepan, Fabian Brunnstrom, and Real Cloutier are the only players to record a hat trick in their first NHL game.
- Matthews four-goal game is the first four-goal game in a season-opening game since Chris Kontos did it against the Chicago Blackhawks in the first game in the history of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992.
- Matthews is the youngest player to score four goals in a NHL game since Bobby Carpenter did it against the St. Louis Blues in 1982.
Leafs Nation, THIS is just the beginning…
